Description
Leadership for Sustainability Welcome to the South African business school that takes sustainability issues seriously. Thank you for visiting our website. We trust that you will find interest in what we do in the business education arena, as well as in how we do it. Sustainability embodies two main ideas. Firstly there is the idea of “business continuity” and organizational longevity, and secondly, there is the idea of “sustainable development”. Both ideas are tied up with the concern of “meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. In all its courses, both short courses and the MBA, Rhodes Business School emphasizes the balance which needs to be placed on the social, environmental and economic performance of organizations which is essential to their successful long-term performance. As a result of the concerns with global warming, for example, there is a risk that public policies and social movements will speed up the demands for companies and other organizations to operate in a more sustainable way. All organizations need to understand these imperatives, as well as to be empowered to respond practically and appropriately. The Rhodes Business School offerings aim to do this. Programs

Post Graduate Diploma in Enterprise Management
There are two options for the PDEM. A full-time option and a part-time option.
Both options are based on the action-learning philosophy. Students on the programme will be expected to learn by doing and to develop conceptual understanding and practical skills through a process of simultaneous interaction. This means that programme differs somewhat from the typical university course.
The target group for the programme is normally postgraduate students from any faculty who have typically NOT majored in Management, Business Administration, Business Management or the equivalent (Although each application is judged on its own merit and context). The Rhodes Business School wishes to bring together a rich diversity of students from different educational backgrounds to create an entrepreneurial group which is representative of the South African people.
Full-Time Option:
The 2016 course begins in February 2016 (dates to be confirmed) in the Rhodes Business School Teaching room. After registration it will start with a period of orientation that will include visits to businesses to provide students with the opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs and to see how their businesses operate. Thereafter during orientation week a process of idea generation for the Alpha project will be followed by forming of groups and businesses and writing of business plans. Lectures will commence on first day of term.
The Rhodes Business School is committed to making a significant contribution to the development of an entrepreneurial culture in South Africa. In a country in which unemployment is high and in which the prospects of finding employment in established organisations appears to be diminishing, more people will have to think in terms of creating their own employment, as opposed to just seeking employment.
The programme is designed to lay the foundations for students who wish to pursue the idea of starting their own businesses, thus creating their own employment as well as employment for others. It is generally held that small businesses create far more jobs from a macroeconomic point of view, than do established, large businesses. Being an entrepreneur has its own set of challenges, agonies and ecstasies. If, at the end of the course, a student feels unsuited to being an entrepreneur, he or she will nevertheless be equipped to pursue a career in business.
Part-Time Option:
The programme starts in January and ends in December.
The Part-Time option is designed to meet the needs of graduates in full-time employment from a wide range of job functions who wish to:
Develop their entrepreneurship skills within their organisation;
Develop an entrepreneurial approach to business;
Enhance their general management ability; and
Deepen and update their business knowledge, understanding and practice.
The PDEM PT is an Honours level equivalent, NQF Level 8 qualification. We are confident that it will prove a great asset to companies who recognise its merits as an internal company development qualification that you can use on your scorecards.
The PDEM PT serves as a precursor qualification for those wanting to pursue an MBA. From 2016, the Department of Higher Education’s regulations requires an NQF Level 8 qualification or an appropriate four-year degree or postgraduate qualification for any student wanting to enroll in an MBA programme (NQF Level 9) at any business education institution in South Africa.

MBA

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) offered by the Rhodes Business School is a course-work degree together with a dissertation of fifteen thousand (15 000) words. The dissertation accounts for 30% of the total credits. The degree is offered on a part-time, modular basis over two and a half years. In the first two years, candidates are required to attend two three-week teaching blocks in Grahamstown each year and to complete work-based assignments in the periods between the teaching blocks. The final six months are dedicated to the completion of the dissertation. The Rhodes Business School’s essence is “Leadership for Sustainability” and hence leadership and sustainability principles underline all subjects in the MBA curriculum. Emphasis is placed on business continuity, as well as achieving a balance between economic, social and environmental sustainability (the Triple Bottom Line). The Business School has committed itself to abide by the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).
The MBA is designed to equip practising and potential managers to assist in the creation, development and leadership of successful organisations in a competitive business environment. To this end, the Rhodes MBA has been designed around what managers need to know in order to ensure that they are able to contribute to the achievement of superior business results in the organisations for which they work. In addition, the Rhodes MBA curriculum has been benchmarked against the curricula of other leading Business Schools. It is also important to note that the Rhodes MBA is fully accredited by the Council on Higher Education. To focus on equipping its graduates with the knowledge and skills to pursue managerial and organisational excellence, the Rhodes MBA programme is based on the following principles:
It is primarily a general MBA aiming to provide an integrated, conceptual and theoretical framework within which to understand generic areas of business and management. It is possible, however, to take up to four elective courses in Environmental Management
It assumes no prior depth of knowledge of business, economics and/or accounting. It is an academic conversion programme, where graduates with first degrees in a diversity of subjects can attain professional knowledge of business and management
It aims to enhance previous management-related work experience by helping students to evaluate their practical business experience from a more professional, academic and research perspective
Where appropriate, it uses a case study-based teaching methodology incorporating South African case studies where they are available.
Eligibility
Applicants should normally:
hold at least a three-year bachelors degree or diploma from an approved university, technikon or other institution
OR
hold a final qualification of a professional body acceptable to the University
have a minimum of three year s full-time relevant practical business and/or organisational experience.

have obtained a pass in Mathematics in Senior Certificate examination or equivalent

If you are attracted by what the Rhodes MBA has to offer but are unsure about your eligibility for our programme and whether it is the right course for you, please contact the Director of the Rhodes University Business School, for an informal discussion.
Selection Procedure
Candidates who, on the basis of their application appear to meet our criteria, are normally invited for an interview at Grahamstown, East London or Port Elizabeth. In addition to enabling us to assess whether you would be suitable for the programme, we are aware that the interview should be a two-way process to ensure that you, the applicant, feel happy with what the Rhodes MBA offers, with no doubts and ambiguities. Applicants may also be required to write an admission test which assesses literacy and numeracy.

The Rhodes Business School Ph.D. Programme
Background
According to the National Qualifications Framework, the Doctorate Degree (General) provides training for an academic career and requires a candidate to undertake research that culminates in a thesis. Furthermore, the research that is produced should be of a publishable standard, thereby demonstrating an original contribution to the body of knowledge. This implies that there is no assessed course-work component, although coursework may be included to facilitate the completion of the degree.
In keeping with its essence, the Business School offers a Ph.D. programme that seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge related to “Leadership for Sustainability”. Topics currently being researched include leadership development, responsible strategic decision making, servant leadership and service as a leadership competency.
At Rhodes Business School we do not have a DBA programme.
Eligibility
The following criteria are used in selecting Ph.D. candidates:
Qualification: Hold a Master’s level qualification [i.e. NQF level 9] in a relevant discipline [e.g. Commerce, Management, Leadership or Business Administration]. This would include course-work Master’s degrees such as an MBA degree.
Academic performance: Achieved an aggregate mark above 65% for the Master’s degree.
Research capability: Proven ability to conduct independent research. This would be reflected in good research performance and output during the Master’s programme. Evidence of publishing research findings would be a distinct advantage.
Attendance: While the Ph.D. degree is usually offered on a part-time basis and not in attendance, candidates are expected to attend Ph.D. weeks twice a year in Grahamstown.
Capacity and alignment: Matching supervisor and student research interests, along with supervision capacity.
Access to data: Have access to a potential site for conducting fieldwork.
Self-Funding: Little funding is available for part-time Ph.D. study. Candidates would need to budget for the costs of their annual registration fees, research costs, conference attendance, and visits to Grahamstown to attend Ph.D. weeks and to meet with the supervisor.
The Ph.D. programme
Duration: At a minimum, a full-time Ph.D. candidate has registered academically for two years and a part-time candidate for three years. Usually, the degree takes longer than this minimum period to complete, and more realistically requires registration for five years to complete the degree that consists of 360 credits or 3 600 notional hours. This amounts to spending an average of almost 15 hours a week for 50 weeks of the year, over a five-year period.
The Ph.D. week: The Ph.D. candidate is required to demonstrate an ability to conduct independent research of a publishable standard. This can prove to be a tough and lonely journey. Consequently, the Business school requires candidates to attend compulsory Ph.D. weeks, twice a year [usually in March and August], as a means of offering support and building a network with other Ph.D. candidates. The main purpose of this week is for Ph.D. candidates to meet with their supervisor and fellow Ph.D. candidates and to receive further guidance on their research progress. There is time allocated for lectures on research methods sustainability and leadership; one-on-one supervision; independent study; and to visit the library. Candidates are also expected to make presentations in this week related to their own research progress. Individuals who may be eligible to register as Ph.D. candidates in the near future are also invited to attend this week and to deliver short presentations of their ideas.
Publishing: An effective way to embark upon the Ph.D. journey is to publish intermittently, before handing the thesis in for examination. This provides smaller milestones along the way and allows the candidate to receive peer feedback, which assists in appraising the potential contribution of the Ph.D. topic. The Business School does not only encourage this practice of publishing once a Ph.D. candidate is registered but also encourages Ph.D. applicants to co-author conference and/or journal publications with a prospective supervisor prior to registration. This collaborative experience is invaluable in exposing applicants to the rigors of academic research, provides some insight into the demands of the Ph.D., and allows the applicant and supervisor to work together prior to formally committing to the demands of a Ph.D.
How to apply
Initial inquiry: Enquiries related to Ph.D. studies can be sent to bizschool@ru.ac.za. Please write “Ph.D. inquiry” in the subject heading of the email and attach a copy of your curriculum vitae. In the body of the email, please provide the following information:
Name:
Highest qualification and name of institution:
Proposed topic:
Academic performance: Aggregate mark achieved for the Master’s degree:
Research capability: A description of your research performance and output.
Access to data: Describe the potential site for conducting fieldwork.
Self-Funding: Confirm that you are able to fund your own studies.
Location: Your proximity to Grahamstown and the likelihood of you being able to travel here for the Ph.D. week and supervision meetings
Duration: The number of years within which you intend to complete the degree.
Upon receiving your inquiry, the School will first consider if we are able to supervise the research and if you are eligible as a Ph.D. candidate. The School reviews its capacity to take on extra supervision, and the alignment of the research topic with the research interests of the School. Thereafter the eligibility of the applicant is reviewed. A member of the Rhodes Business School faculty will then respond to your email, either advising you that (1) you are ineligible for the Ph.D. programme, (2) that we are unable to consider your application at this stage, or (3) putting you in touch with a prospective supervisor.
Research Collaboration: In the case of the applicant being put in in touch with a prospective supervisor, the two parties will begin to explore the topic in more detail and to collaborate on a research paper for delivery at a conference, or for publication in a journal. The applicant will also be invited to attend and present at the next Ph.D. week.
Formal Application: Once the prospective supervisor is satisfied that s/he is ready to take on the supervision of the applicant, a formal application to the university can be made.
